Sergio Ariño-Blasco, MD, MPhil
Dr. Ariño-Blasco is the director of the Geriatric Department at the Hospital General of Granollers, a teaching hospital attached to the University of Barcelona, Spain. He has been working in geriatric medicine for over fifteen years. He also holds a master of philosophy degree and a certificate of specialist training in geriatric medicine from the University of Wales College of Medicine.
He is a member of the Catalan and the Spanish Geriatrics Societies and represents Spain at the Geriatrics Section of the European Union of Medical Specialties. Dr. Ariño's research interests cover clinical areas, bioethics, comprehensive geriatric assessment, and service provision. He is participating in international research projects founded by the European Commission (ACMEplus and DOE). In 2001 he and his team received the Aventis Award at the National Spanish Geriatrics Society Congress. He was appointed by the director of Programa Vida al Anys of Catalunya and by the Ministry of Health to represent Catalunya and Spain in interRAI. Dr. Ariño hopes to mount a joint health and social ministries national project to promote the use of the MDS among the nursing home sector in Spain. In Catalunya a RAI-CAT group, supported by the Catalan Health Service, has been developed to identify implementation options for various interRAI instruments.
