Tuula Saarela, MD, PhD&
Director of Psychiatric Services
Dr. Saarela served as the chief psychiatrist in the Helsinki Department of Old Age Psychiatry from 1995 to 2004, and has since been the director of psychiatric services in Helsinki. The City Health Center provides psychiatric outpatient and hospital services for people over 18 years of age. She has earned her MA degree in clinical psychology, and her medical degree and her specialist training in psychiatry (MD, PhD) at Helsinki University. She is also an old age psychiatrist and a licensed psychotherapist. She currently also serves as an associate member of the forensic board at the Medico-Legal Affairs of the National Institute for Health and Welfare under the Finnish Ministry of Social Affairs and Health. She is a member of the Finnish Psychiatric Association, where she currently serves on the national committee promoting leadership training in mental health care. She is a member of the International Psychogeriatric Association and the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry. She teaches geriatric psychiatry at the Helsinki University Medical School and is engaged in numerous activities in the Continuing Medical Education (CME) field. The focus of her research activities is old age psychiatry.
