interRAI Fellow and Treasurer Dr. John Hirdes Inducted into the Order of Canada

interRAI is proud to announce that Dr. John P. Hirdes, long-standing Canada Senior Fellow, Treasurer, and global leader in health systems research, has been formally inducted into the Order of Canada. The ceremony was held at Rideau Hall and presided over by the Governor General of Canada Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon. The Order of Canada is one of the country’s highest civilian honours, recognizing individuals whose service has shaped the nation’s well-being and future.

Dr. Hirdes was appointed as a Member of the Order of Canada for his pioneering work advancing equitable, evidence-informed approaches to assessment, care planning, and health system performance. His contributions over several decades have strengthened the scientific foundations of interRAI instruments, expanded their international reach, and supported their adoption as national standards in Canada and in countries around the world.

At the University of Waterloo, Dr. Hirdes has mentored generations of scientists, clinicians, and policymakers, and has led numerous studies that improved the care and quality of life of older adults, persons with mental health needs, and individuals with complex health and social challenges.

Within interRAI, Dr. Hirdes has played a central role in instrument development, quality measurement, governance, and capacity building. His leadership has shaped foundational components of the interRAI Suite, including work on mental health systems, home care, long-term care, quality indicators, and multinational research programs. His service as Treasurer and senior advisor has helped ensure interRAI’s enduring global impact.

This honour reflects not only Dr. Hirdes’s extraordinary contributions, but also the broader values that guide interRAI: scientific excellence, collaboration, and a commitment to improving the lives of vulnerable people in every region of the world.

interRAI extends its warmest congratulations to Dr. Hirdes and looks forward to continuing to work with him as interRAI strengthens its mission and global partnerships.
